Paddle Around at These 5 Boat Launches Near Victoria, BC

Thetis Lake Regional Park - View Royal, BC

Address: Six Mile Road, View Royal, BC V9B 5Z6

Thetis Lake Regional Park's sheltered location and calm, predictable waters make it the perfect place for novice paddlers near our View Royal homes for sale to get some practice in. There are actually two lakes to explore here:

  • Lower Thetis Lake, the larger of the two pools, and the location of the park's boat launch
  • Upper Thetis Lake, a spot you can only reach by paddling up the lower lake and through the canal that runs between the two

The lower lake is much easier to navigate than the upper one, so start there and make your way up when you're feeling confident in the water. Both lakes offer incredible views of the park's forests and coastline.

Verdier Park - Brentwood Bay, BC

Address: Verdier Avenue, Brentwood Bay, BC V8M 1C5

Verdier Park is one of the best paddling launch points in Greater Victoria. This one spot near our Central Saanich homes for sale gives you access to four prime paddling locations:

  • Brentwood Bay straight ahead, a wide-open expanse of water filled with seals, herons, and even bioluminescent plankton
  • Tod Inlet to the south, a quiet stretch of water that takes you past Victoria's famous Butchart Gardens
  • Saanich Inlet to the north, a wider waterway that can take you past Bamberton and John Dean Provincial Parks and up toward Mill Bay
  • McKenzie Bight to the southwest, a large chunk of the upper part of Finlayson Arm, bordered by the gorgeous Gowlland Tod Provincial Park

All of these places are suitable for intermediate-level paddlers, and you'll almost certainly see many other hobbyists cruising around the area. Most of them will be happy to give you directions or a helping hand if you need it.

Oak Bay Marina - Victoria, BC

Address: 1327 Beach Drive, Victoria, BC V8S 2N4

Oak Bay Marina offers folks living near our Oak Bay homes for sale a convenient spot to launch kayaks and paddleboards into the sparkling Salish Sea. Once you leave the docks, you can:

  • Travel along the coastline, enjoying views of spots like Willows Park and Cattle Point
  • Cross the Baynes Channel to see the Chain Islets and all the wildlife that live there
  • Continue past the islets to Discovery Island Marine Park, a rustic recreation area you can only access by boat

The ocean currents get stronger the further out you go, so you should only attempt to reach Discovery Island if you're an experienced paddler. Keep an eye on the weather, too; if there's any chance a storm might be coming, it's best to stay close to the shore.

Songhees Park- Victoria, BC

Address: Songhees Walkway, Victoria, BC V9A 0G1

Songhees Park sits on a beautiful section of craggy coastline with a small beach perfect for launching kayaks and paddleboards. Get yours into the water to cruise around:

  • The Gorge Waterway
  • The Juan de Fuca Strait
  • The Inner Harbour

You read that right: As long as you're careful not to disrupt the other watercraft, you can go paddling in Victoria's iconic Inner Harbour. This busy seaport is always thrumming with activity, offering an excellent view of Victoria's downtown core. Stay alert, give ferries, seaplanes, and other harbour traffic plenty of room, and follow posted harbour rules.

Selkirk Green Park - Victoria, BC

Address: 350 Waterfront Crescent, Victoria, BC V8T 5K3

Selkirk Green Park is located just a little north of Victoria's main commercial hub. Use the boat dock here to get onto the Gorge Waterway and paddle past landmarks like:

  • Point Hope Maritime, a commercial shipyard where you can watch massive shipping vessels come and go
  • The Sail & Life Training Society's docks and two tall ships (they look like pirate ships!)
  • The historic Point Elice House and bridge
  • The Selkirk Trestle, a long footpath that connects Victoria West and Burnside

This area isn't quite as crowded as the Inner Harbour, but you'll still need to be extra careful when navigating around structures and other boats. It's a great place to dip your toes (pun intended!) into the world of urban paddling before you give the busier areas a try.

Frequently Asked Questions About Paddling Around Victoria

Where can beginners go kayaking near Victoria?

Thetis Lake Regional Park is a good place for newer paddlers because the water is sheltered and easier to navigate than many ocean launch points. Lower Thetis Lake is especially approachable if you want a calmer place to build confidence before exploring busier waterways.

Can you kayak in Victoria's Inner Harbour?

Yes, you can kayak in Victoria's Inner Harbour, but it is a busy working harbour with ferries, seaplanes, tour boats, and other marine traffic. Stay alert, give other vessels plenty of room, and follow posted harbour rules whenever you paddle there.

What should you bring when paddling around Southern Vancouver Island?

Bring a properly fitted life jacket, weather-appropriate clothing, drinking water, sun protection, and a way to check changing conditions. If you plan to paddle in ocean waters, check the wind, tides, and current before you launch.
